First Star Academy
Less than half of youth in foster care graduate high school. Less than 10% enroll in college. And even fewer graduate—less than 0.003%. For students that participate in First Star Academies nationwide, 99% graduate high school and 88% enroll in college. In a state that recently reported very few youth who age-out of the foster care system entering four-year universities, the University of Utah’s First Star Academy has already sent eight students to the U.
Impact Scholars
Impact Scholars works holistically with students who have experienced foster care to address the myriad barriers they face that could disrupt the completion of their degrees. The Alex Smith Foundation, established by NFL quarterback and U alumna Alex Smith and his wife Liz, recently established the Alex Smith and Elizabeth Smith Impact Scholars Scholarship to fund First Star graduates who study at the U.
